Volunteers On Loan To Schools

Setting our "community based" program in motion is a diverse group of talented professionals and retirees from all fields of engineering, science, technology, business and education. Sharing what they know and love, each volunteer is carefully screened and trained to provide a truly unforgettable "in school" learning experience. Injecting real world relevance into every session, each volunteer freely commits their energy and amazing ideas to ensure that every student enters high school with a basic understanding of electricity, electronics and energy.

Window of Opportunity

There is little disagreement that America's education system is in need of an overhaul. We share a common concern that too much emphasis has been placed on the results of state and national standardized tests. As well intended as standardized tests may have been, these high-stakes tests and assessments have taken a toll on education. This is especially true at the middle school level where these pressures often translate into fewer exploratory courses.

Exploration is important for young adolescents because it ensures hands-on, participatory, meaningful, and engaging experiences. For many students, middle school may be the last opportunity to explore new subjects and interests. The TLC program offers a window of opportunity and provides an experience that students aren't likely to have unless they take physics later in high school. Physics can easily be described as the science that explains how things work. Anyone who has taken Professor Know-How’s Lab raves about how interesting and fun it was. Because only a handful of high school students are likely to take physical science, Professor Know-How's Lab may be the only chance many young people will get to experience a program such as this.
